Clearwell staff designed storm sewer safety features for culverts in Cedar Rapids. Improvements include a safety apron with a 4:1 slope, replacing the flared end section. Safety grates are spaced to allow water flow as well as provide a “ladder” if someone is trapped. Maintenance access pads to allow easy access for debris removal. Low flows are not restricted as the bottom grate is raised 8 inches from the ground.
The City of Cedar Rapids has made a number of safety improvements to their existing storm sewer system in the wake of a tragic accident in 2014. It is the hope that these improvements prevent future accidents, while maintaining the function and capacity of the sewer system.
